Deposit disputes in Texas almost always come down to cleaning — not damage. A thorough move-out clean is the single highest-ROI thing you can do in the 48 hours before your final walkthrough.

Step one: empty the home completely. Every cabinet, drawer, closet, pantry, and appliance should be vacant before cleaning starts. Landlords and property managers cannot inspect around your stuff, so leftover items usually get billed as 'trash-out' at premium rates.

Step two: kitchens and bathrooms. These are the two rooms every landlord inspects first. Inside oven, inside microwave, inside fridge, cabinet interiors, sink and faucet polish, grout scrub, tub, toilet, mirrors, exhaust fans, and every square inch of tile.

Step three: detail wiping. Baseboards, door frames, door tops, switch plates, outlet covers, blinds, ceiling fans, and window sills. These are the most commonly cited items in landlord walk-throughs and the easiest wins for your deposit.

Step four: floors last. Vacuum every carpet edge-to-edge (a rented machine is fine), then mop every hard surface. If carpets are heavily soiled, professional carpet cleaning may be required by your lease — check before you assume.

Step five: document everything. Take date-stamped photos of every room after cleaning. If a dispute happens later, photos win.
